Stop At: Fort Jesus Museum

The day trip starts with a pick-up from your hotel or desired to pick up location in Mombasa at around 8 am drive through the city center to the historic old town (kibokoni) where you can find the famous Fort Jesus museum designed by the Italian Giovanni Battista and founded by King Philip of Portugal’s order to protect the old port of Mombasa between 1593 and 1596.

There you can learn everything there is to be learned about Mombasa and how it has grown. A guide will then continue to provide you with a guided tour through the Mombasa Club, Africa Hotel, Mandhry Mosque, Government Square, entering the Old Port, and continuing to the Old Spice Market. You will pass past old colonial houses and mosques as the tour progresses, exploring the history and roots of Mombasa. Lunch in the old town-local cuisine on the menu with either seafood, pilau, or biryani, available for you to taste the delicacy of Swahili.

After that, just to enjoy the scenic view of where the island ends and the ocean starts, you can take a drive along Mama Ngina Drive. The Likoni Ferry channel linking the north to the south coast is only a few meters away.

Finally, as the local Swahili call them, visit the Popular Pembe za ndovu(Elephant Tusks) again, they can also be found on the back of the 50 ksh note. They symbolized Mombasa back in the Arab trade period as the key to the ivory trade. Your driver’s guide will stop you for a photoshoot there. You also get a chance to do some shopping on the streets of the town of Mombasa.

Stop At: Haller Park

Later, in the afternoon, you’ll go to Haller Park to feed the giraffes. Haller Park (formerly the Bamburi Nature Trail) is situated along the Mombasa / Malindi highway, south of the Bamburi cement factory. A result of the company’s efforts to turn a barren landscape of disused limestone quarries into a vibrant and diverse forest, grassland, and pond ecosystem since 1971.

Haller Park currently hosts a number of species, including hippos, giraffes, buffaloes, and antelopes, as well as smaller mammals and birds. The Park was the first recipient to be recognized for the exceptional, ecologically sustainable, and efficient rehabilitation conducted with the United Nations Environmental Program Global 500 Roll of Honour award.

The Park consists of a Game Sanctuary, Reptile Park, a small Fish Farm area show, Palm Garden, Crocodile pens, and a giraffe viewing platform, providing a range of attractions to educate and entertain the more than 160,000 visitors who visit the park each year at different stages. From mangrove palms and magnificent indigenous shade trees to coastal forests where many of these plants are rare and endangered, the diversity of vegetation is considerable: a refuge for botanists. Yet, each plant plays an important role in the ecosystem’s overall harmony.

From the cheeky Vervet monkeys to the elegant giraffe, the park also offers a home to different animal species; Weaver birds, Kingfisher, Storks, Herons, Egrets, Owls, Eagles, Kites, Cranes, Ibis, Sandpipers, the list is endless, Haller Park a must-visit for all bird lovers. You can choose between Haller Park or proceed to Akamba Handicraft, the local artisan association that manages the development and sale in Mombasa of wooden carvings and other souvenirs. You would be amazed at what can come out of a simple piece of wood, walking in the workshop and seeing how everything is handled. You will have a chance to shop and purchase some of the carvings and souvenirs that you may have enjoyed in the workshops after the tour of the workshops. They can ship them abroad for you as well. It’s now time to take you back to your hotel after you are done with shopping or drop off time for dinner.
